A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
