Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a clamor for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
