They're Doing to America What They Performed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most telling and characteristic instances – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of a few weeks, the American president began displaying all observers his plans for a lavish reception room double the dimensions compared to the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the eastern section to erect it.

He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of fatalities from his cuts to USAID amounts to 600,000 and rising, and presently a study predicted his energy policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have imagined – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the executive mansion to build a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which have business with federal agencies.

We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the world' toward 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'

As disorienting as it is to observe the president attempt to overturn the established notion about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have witnessed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they turned a figure of compassion into a symbol of hate who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in the Gospel; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Christ from my childhood, as conceptually Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and since the rapidly expanding group of Americans might have little sense regarding him since they are atheists or uncertain individuals or nones. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of significant worth in biblical accounts.

It is unquestionably not the account of a mighty king arising; instead, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to avoid covert authorities. The baby grows up in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his teaching is about love for fellow humans, specifically for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Christ's response to hostility is to offer the other cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a means to educate the aggressor; his crime policy indicates that whenever an individual takes your coat you should give him your sweater too.

The evident and clear fact that Christ of the gospels advocates for a kind of extreme compassion focused on the poor has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: appealing to the populace, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.

A Battle for the Highest Among Us

Hence I have become encouraged to see the determined opposition to Trump emerge in this past year. It has been substantial consolation to help build the movement that has protested openly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated citizens to show up in significant amounts in interim political contests. We shall require to persist with it, and in the same spirit, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the finest aspects within national heritage.

We're going to be asked ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you receive him and embrace them or refuse?

The nation is most protected, in other words, by relationship to the highest about American history, just as Christianity is optimally secured through connection to elements that cause it to be unique and wonderful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In neither case does it suggest pretending the worst regarding America and religious tradition was nonexistent; it signifies both modesty and faith, a mixture that committed American Christians ought to accept.
