Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to question certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
